Somebody is already telling your story. Right now. While you are reading this, deciding whether you have the time, the budget, or the nerve to tell it yourself, somebody else already picked up the pen.
Could be a reporter on deadline. Could be a competitor who smells blood. Could be a group chat with 14 people and zero facts. Could be the comment section under a post you did not even write. And here is the part that should sit you straight up in your chair. They are not waiting for your permission. They are not fact checking. And they are definitely not protecting your name.
That is the whole reason I built this show. And this piece is the first of many, because we are just getting started.
Welcome to CTRL the Narrative
This is the launch of the CTRL the Narrative podcast, and I could not think of a better place to start than the sentence my whole platform is built on. If you don’t CTRL the narrative, the streets will, and it won’t be in your favor.
I am Tonya McKenzie. Founder and Principal Consultant at Sand and Shores, Los Angeles County Commissioner of Alcohol and Other Drugs, and a mother of four student athletes who learned early exactly what it means when somebody decides who you are before you get a word in. I have spent more than 20 years watching reputations get built over a decade and torched in an afternoon. I do not do fluff. I do strategy. And over the next stretch of solo episodes, I am going to hand you the same strategy I give the leaders, athletes, and founders who pay for it. Speaker training, media training, and narrative control… It’s not optional.

Silence is not neutral. Silence is surrender.
The biggest myth I deal with is the belief that staying quiet is the classy move. It is not. Silence is not neutral. Silence is a statement, and usually it is the wrong one. When you say nothing, people do not think, “Wow, how dignified.” They think you are hiding, you do not care, or you got caught. Your silence becomes a blank page, and the audience always writes the worst version, because the worst version is more interesting.
You would not let a stranger sign your name on a contract. So why are you letting them sign it on your story?

Do this today
If you take nothing else from episode one, take these three:
Write your one sentence. Ten seconds to say who you are and what you stand for. If it takes more than one breath, cut it down.
Name the question you fear. Say it out loud and answer it. Record it on your phone. You will hear exactly where you flinch, and that is where the work is.
Google yourself. You cannot control a narrative you have not even read. Whatever shows up first is the story strangers are believing about you right now.
Do those three and you are already ahead of 90 percent of people who think reputation just happens to them.

Tonya, you've highlighted something every leader eventually confronts: if you don't define your narrative, others will define it for you. But sustaining that narrative requires more than visibility, it requires consistency between what you say, what you do, and what others experience. A reputation can be shaped by messaging, but it's ultimately sustained by credibility. That's where narrative becomes influence rather than simply promotion.
